the new lawrence, ks public library The future of the small, public library depends on its ability to meet new and unforeseen information technologies, while still facilitating existing information mediums, and to further embrace the community in which it serves. This design for the addition to the Lawrence, KS public library proposes to demolish the existing library in favor of a spatial program which is flexible, yet individual to three main needs: digital media, community space, and book storage. The only existing part of the library which will remain are the “vertical fins.” These fins are left to create a modulation which dictates the size and scale of the new addition’s sections. Main entry into the library is on the bottom floor. Access to the two main media spaces, digital/ future media, and book storage, is gained only through the community space in the middle which branches into vertical circulation in the thin, east portion of the building. With an ever-changing and uncertain direction in library science, it is this library’s main goal to provide flexible spaces for any type of media, and a nourishing environment for the public to enjoy it.
